As reported previously, the Caldy Junior Team, under the Captaincy of Sam Johnston (aka Swedish Sam), won the Wirral Junior Golf League beating our neighbours, Royal Liverpool, to first place!

As winners of the Wirral Junior Golf League, the team automatically progress to the North West final where they would face the respective league champions of the Mid Cheshire Junior Golf  League and the Southport and District Junior Golf League. This year the winners of the Mid Cheshire Junior Golf League were Hartford and the winners of the Southport and District Junior Golf League were Hesketh, who beat Royal Birkdale in the league decider! Incidentally, Royal Birkdale were crowned champions of the North West last year!

This year’s North West Junior Final was hosted by Hillside Golf Club and took place on Sunday, the 6th of October 2019.

The strong Caldy team were represented by Captain Sam Johnston, Cameron Walker, George Rowan, Sam Lea and Aidan Simpson.

After arriving at Hillside with an hour and half to spare, the boys started to focus on the day’s competition and spent time on the practice facilities.

Despite the very windy and inclement conditions, the Caldy team won the final by two points. Yes, this was a close scoring affair!  To this end, the format is teams of five, with the top four Stableford scores counting towards the team’s eventual score.

Although this was a team event, a special mention goes out to George Rowan who was our top scorer on the day. George scored 34 points with five blobs! To be honest, hardly any of the competitors scored above 30! There were some broken golfers at the finish line!

After the match, the boys got suited and booted and were treated to gammon, eggs and chips, followed by fruit crumble.

The final standings were Hartford in third place, Hesketh in second place and Caldy in first place. There were eight points between the third and first placed teams. A close affair!

The highlight of the day was Swedish Sam’s victory speech and his rendition of “We’ve conquered all of Wirral…” Rumour has it, a victory single will be released in time for Xmas!

A special thank you goes out to Paul Williams who very kindly bought the boys a team top.  I have to say not only did the boys look the part (see photos), but they also played the part!

As Junior Organiser, it has been an absolute pleasure being in the company of our Junior competitors throughout the season. They have been an absolute credit to themselves and the club! Although the gents mentioned above represented the club at the final, we must not overlook the contributions of Anthony Hirons, Charlie Criss and Owen Stephenson who helped us along the way! Let’s hope that we can build on this success next season, where we will also be taking part in the inaugural Wirral Sixes League. This provides a format of competitive golf for our young members who are new to the game!

Well folks it has been a blast of a season and I have enjoyed every minute of it! Before I sign off, I want you to take time to reflect on the fact that:

and….wait for it
