Caldy Juniors Retain Title

Caldy Juniors Retain Title!!

Your intrepid reporter and JO is very proud to report that under the captaincy of Cameron Walker, the Junior Team won the Wirral Junior League 2020 by securing a win over a strong Prenton side at the Field of Dreams aka Caldy GC on 27 September 2020.

The final score against Prenton was 4-2 with wins from Captain Walker aka Caldy Cam, Sam Lea, George Rowan and debutant, Harry Payne. This match went to the wire and nothing else than a win would do to leapfrog Wallasey to the top of the league!

Harry Payne deserves a special mention in that he answered the call, whilst on the rugby pitch I might add, to represent the team in this League decider due to Luke Garvey having to withdraw because of illness.  It has to be said that Harry, who is a mere 10 years old, lives on the Practice Ground and all that practise really paid off yesterday with a 4&3 victory!  Harry blew away his opponent with two 30 yard putts! Your intrepid reporter and JO witnessed his sublime bunker shot on the 12th and his approach shot to the 18th!  I would also add that via his participation in the Brown Competitions, Harry got his handicap down from 54 to 29 this season! He really is a CALDY gent!

Although golf is a solitary sport, this was truly a team performance with a number of Juniors representing the club over this campaign.  To this end, your JO would like to thank the boys, including Captain Cameron Walker aka Caldy Cam, ex-Junior Captain, Sam Johnston aka Swedish Sam, Jack Gibson, Sam Lea, the man mountain aka George Rowan, Luke Garvey, Aidan Simpson, Anthony Hirons and the big man himself, Harry Payne for representing the club this campaign. These gents are a real credit to this great club of ours and their parents. They have conducted themselves impeccably in the spirit of true sportsmanship! This JO is a very proud man!

Well, that is it for now folks and you can be rest assured that preparations are underway already for next year’s campaign, with the majority of the team being available for Junior selection in 2021! Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we do not get the opportunity to defend our crown as North West Champions as the Mid-Cheshire league was cancelled this year; having said that, we do get to keep the North West Champions League trophy for another year!

I would like to say a special thank you to our Club Manager, Richard Beswick for his unwavering support during this campaign and for not moaning each time your JO asked him to change a tee booking.  I would also like to thank John Crosby for his support during this campaign, including assisting with advance tee bookings and posting these articles without removing the word “Klopp” from them! 😂 A special mention goes to my boss, namely, John Stewart, the Chair of Handicap for supporting all things Junior this season. For those of you that do not know, the JO sits under the Handicap Committee.  Finally, it is genuinely pleasing when this JO gets stopped by members enquiring about the success of the Junior section. It really is much appreciated and reinforces the fact that….wait for it….#WeAreCaldy💪💪💪

Before signing off, I think that it is only appropriate to share with you the new Junior anthem for 2020. It goes like this:

“We conquered all of Wirral

We are never going to stop

From Wallasey down to Bromborough

We have won the lot

Cameron Walker is our Captain

We have the run of Caldy’s Greens

We are proud golfers

Allez Allez Allez

Allez Allez Allez
