Result Lost 2 – 6
Thanks to Messrs Fair, Davies, Brocklebank and Speirs, the Seniors team managed to regain the trophy from our friends at Wallasey. Victory was looking unlikely following defeats in the first four matches and Caldy lost by 6 -2, however, assisted by a thumping win in the home leg, the team was victorious overall by 9 1/2 – 6 1/2 . The course was beautifully prepared and the hospitality and catering exceptional. It is always a pleasure to meet our colleagues from Wallasey.
Result Lost 1 1/2 – 8 1/2
All the clubs we visit are friendly and welcoming but Llangollen has to be the best in terms of its’ setting. The views are terrific and coupled with a well kept and challenging course, our visit is always a pleasure.
We arrived at Llangollen at a disadvantage, having lost the home match 4.5 – 5.5 and we knew it would be a difficult job to get anything out of the match, and so it proved.
All started well when John Walker leading the team out with Steve Jones secured a victory but unfortunately the rest of the team found it difficult to get a result. Four of the matches ended on the 18th. but the Caldy team could not gain another win. Peter Humphrey and Tom Owens managed a half but in the end Llangollen had a clear victory.
We look forward to 2020 when hopefully the result will be more favourable for Caldy.
Overall Llangollen 14 – Caldy 6.
Result – Won 5 1/2 – 4 1/2
We had an early start at Prenton with the first match going out at 8.10am. The course was in really good condition due to all the rain we have had lately and we were fortunate to have fine weather all day.
We went into the match with a good lead 8.5 – 1.5 and we managed to build on that lead by winning the match 5.5 – 4.5 giving Caldy a clear overall victory of 14 – 6.
At lunch, Gordon Fair whose ball had landed 32.5 inches from the flag on the ‘Nearest The Pin’ hole was disappointed to discover that he missed out on winning a bottle of wine to Nigel McIntyre whose ball ended up 19.5 inches from the hole. Bad luck Gordon, well done Nigel.
Our Vice Chairman, John Walker, accepted the cup on behalf of Caldy Seniors. All agreed that it had been a good day and we look forward to competing for, and hopefully retaining the cup in 2020.
Result – Won 8 1/2 – 1 1/2
On the 15th July Caldy welcomed Prenton, a match we always enjoy. It was a beautiful day, bright sunshine, slight breeze and the course in fantastic condition. We went into the match hoping for a hat – trick of victories having beaten Bromborough and Vicars Cross in our two previous matches. The team produced a terrific result winning 8.5 – 1.5, the best result so far this season. Karl Bergh was brought in at the last minute due to an injury to one of the team and led the way partnering Bob Nixon in the opening match to a win.
Prenton were very gracious in defeat but made it clear that they will fight all the way at the return match to try and cause an upset. We look forward to meeting the challenge.
As we enter the later part of the season we start to play the second leg matches, hopefully converting scores from the first part of the season into wins.
Result – Lost 4 1/2 – 5 1/2
On a typical Caldy day, sunny, warm and with a strong breeze we entertained a very accomplished team from Llangollen. Our visitors were obviously keen to play at Caldy as they started arriving just after 8.00am. There was a good turnout for pre match coffee and a chance to catch up with our friends from Wales. After the match we enjoyed a good lunch, plenty of banter and a great atmosphere, exactly what Seniors golf is all about.
Llangollen ran out winners in a very close match 4.5 – 5.5 and we look forward to the return match in August when we hope to overturn our 1 point deficit.
Chester ( A)
Result – Lost 4 – 6
The May visit to Chester resulted in a 4 – 6 defeat – a result which should mean we have a good chance of regaining the shield when the return fixture is played in September. The course was in excellent condition and, as usual, we were provided with a first class meal after the golf. It is always a pleasure to play against the Chester members for whom we have the greatest respect.
Result – Draw 4 – 4
The Seniors match at Heswall on Monday 15th April was played in very windy conditions and with the dry, running fairways players enjoyed some long drives bringing some distant hazards into play. We were made very welcome with tea/coffee on arrival and a tasty meal after the match. Caldy were successful in the 2 ‘nearest the pin ‘ competitions, being won by Alan Clydesdale and Paul Leidecker The match result was an honourable half (4 – 4). This sets up nicely the return match at Caldy in October.
Our Chairman, Bob Nixon, commented that it was good to be back at Heswall, a sentiment which was roundly applauded by all.
Result – Won 8 – 2
With the Senior Summer Season now well underway on Monday 29/4/19 we welcomed Leasowe to Caldy. The match was very popular with our members and we had so many wishing to play that there was a waiting list to get into the team.
Playing in ideal conditions we enjoyed a terrific result winning 8 – 2. There had been concern regarding the condition of the course following the storm two days beforehand, however, the course was in great shape and was a credit to our greenkeepers.
We look forward to the return fixture on 11/6/19. and I am sure Leasowe will be pulling out all the stops to reverse the score.
Result – Lost 2 – 8
The match at Bromborough was played in perfect weather conditions, sunny, warm and a slight breeze. As usual Bromborough proved most hospitable with coffee on arrival, a ‘half way house’ at the side of the 9th. green where a variety of drinks (non – alcoholic) together with biscuits were provided and later, a very pleasant lunch. The course was in fine condition and although there is work going on drilling a bore hole to provide extra water the work did not impinge on the course.
Bromborough put out a very strong team resulting in good win for them but we look forward to the return leg when we hope to redress the balance.
Result – Won – 7 ½ – ½
A breezy day, but turning sunny as we played. The greens continue to improve but the rough is now coming more into play. A good fish pie meal afterwards and an excellent result for the home team.
Results – Won – 6 1/2 – 3 1/2
“We were looking to peg back the good lead that Bromborough had taken following our match at Bromborough earlier in the year. Although Caldy had a good win today at 6 ½ to 3 ½ , the result over the two matches was a win for Bromborough 8.1/2 – 11.1/2. Caldy managed to win Nearest the Pin at hole 8 when Chris Davies hit a terrific shot to 8 feet.
We always enjoy our matches against Bromborough as the teams are generally evenly matched and we look forward to 2020 when we try to win back the trophy.
The Bromborough team were very complimentary regarding the course and were particularly impressed with the greens, so once again well done to the greens staff.
Pickles Walnut received a big ‘ thumbs up’ for the Fish and Chips, together with mushy peas that they provided.
We now look forward to the Away Day at Prestatyn next week before our next fixture against Vicars Cross.
