The course at Caldy provides an eclectic mix of cliff-top links, parkland and heathland, almost 3 courses in one. The original 1907 layout comprised 9 holes on the cliffs, but the course as we now know it owes much to the redesign and extension overseen by James Braid in 1930.
The strategy and ethos of our course management is to strive to remain faithful to this James Braid inception of the course, harnessing and making best use of the natural surroundings we are fortunate to enjoy, to provide an always interesting challenge.
We have a thriving Ladies’ Section, with around 240 members from junior girls to our more senior ladies who love to meet for coffee or lunch several times a week. We have Strokeplay medal or Stableford club competitions every week in summer and fun competitions in winter.
When our round of golf is over, we enjoy a friendly chat over a drink or snack and take in views of the course, the River Dee and Wales. Our clubhouse is also the perfect setting for our many social events, dinners, dances, entertainments and annual ball.
For many years, Caldy has enjoyed healthy numbers in its junior section with there currently being 70 or so boys and girls at the Club. This is one of the largest junior sections in Cheshire
Described as being “a Club with a long tradition of welcoming and encouraging junior golf”, Caldy maintains an active marketing programme and liaison with the local schools community in order to encourage juniors to take up golf and learn the sport
It was Jack Morris, nephew of the famous Old Tom Morris who drew up the Course Plan in 1906 for 9 holes, which were opened in 1907. His fee was £1.11s.6p. (£ 1.57 ½ p). Twenty three years later, five times Open Champion, James Braid presented his plans for an extended 18 hole course which was opened in 1931. Braid received 10 Guineas for his efforts.
Since those early days the course has undergone considerable investment with the purchase of adjoining land, building the tees and greens to USGA specification. The old Clubhouse is now part of a private residence and major drainage work throughout the course and practice ground has been completed to maximise playing conditions.
Caldy’s main assets apart from the Course, are the truly magnificent views from the Clubhouse and terrace. Down the 1st and 18th fairways, across the river Dee, then onwards towards the Welsh coastline, the Clwyd Hills and finally the Snowdonia Mountain ranges. The spacious air conditioned Clubhouse provides a friendly atmosphere in which to relax.
