Now in its 20th year, Caldy’s Festival of Golf has once again proven to be an unqualified success with over 700 visitors from all over the UK visiting us here at the Club during the course of the past week. The weather God’s were smiling on us and other than an isolated shower or two, our visitors have enjoyed good weather and the course presented in great fashion by Carl Crocher and the team. Scoring has been good on all days (indeed remarkable on one or two!) and perhaps the highlight of our Open Events was a Hole in One at the 8th hole by Mike Eden of Antrobus Golf Club. Mike was presented with a dozen golf balls and a bottle of Champagne for his achievement.
On Day 1 for our Men’s Open the winning score in a Four Ball Betterball format was from Ken Lane and Pete Schofield of Low Laithes Golf Club with 45 Points from the white tees.
Day 2 produced perhaps the highest scoring seen at the Festival in recent times with Messrs Chris Starkie and Don Hughes from Heswall and Bromborough recording a positively remarkable 50 Points. We have of course, contacted their respective Handicap Chairmen to tell them how delighted we were at their success!
Normality resumed on Day 3 with the Ladies Open played in a best two from four Stableford Team format. The winning score of 87 Points was returned by Debbie Hirons, Rita Cox, Maria Clarke and Maureen Bentham. The four ladies were all Members of different Clubs in the Lancashire area.
Our final Open Event was the Mixed Open which probably enjoyed the best weather of the week with warm temperatures, a gentle breeze and all round perfect golfing conditions. Congratulations go to the winning team of Tracey Naylor, Nigel Curran, Debbie Brayzier and Andy Riley, who scored an extremely impressive 86 Points.
We now look forward to the finale of the week when we play host to our generous Sponsors and their guests for our Sponsors Day Event. 17 Teams will take part, although if the weather forecast is to be believed the Golf may need to take place indoors rather than on the course. Fingers crossed.
As ever, our thanks are due to Carl and the Green Staff for presenting the course in great condition during the week. Alan Gibbons and Josh Dixon in the ProShop have handled welcoming our guests and player registration with great efficiency. To Mark, Louise and all the Pickled Walnut team for providing high quality catering from early morning until late evening which has met with great comments from so many visitors. Finally to all our volunteer starters who have contributed to the warm welcome for which Caldy is so well renowned.
With online booking already available for next year’s event (many thanks to Mr Ex for facilitating this) we are delighted to report that we have already taken numerous bookings for our 21st birthday FOG. We look forward to welcoming our visitors to Caldy once again.
